Consortium of National Law Universities

The Consortium of National Law Universities exists to run one admission test, CLAT, on behalf of the National Law Universities that had previously taken turns conducting it themselves. Formed on 19 August 2017, it brought that rotating, inconsistent arrangement under one body; nearly all of India's National Law Universities are members, the chief exception being National Law University, Delhi, which continues to admit through its own test, AILET. Each year's CLAT is overseen by a Convenor Vice-Chancellor who rotates among the member universities, with a permanent secretariat established at NLSIU Bangalore.

Examinations NLU Consortium conducts

  • CLAT PG

    Common Law Admission Test (Postgraduate)

CLAT PG is the common entrance test for the one-year LLM programme at the National Law Universities and at other law schools that admit through it. The Consortium of National Law Universities conducts it, testing constitutional law and jurisprudence alongside the candidate's chosen area of law.

  • CLAT UG

    Common Law Admission Test (Undergraduate)

CLAT UG is the common entrance test for the five-year integrated law degree — BA LLB and its variants — at the National Law Universities and at other law schools that admit through it. The Consortium of National Law Universities conducts it, and a candidate's score and rank are used across every participating university rather than each setting its own test.
