National Testing Agency

The National Testing Agency is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, set up in 2017 to take entrance testing off the boards and councils that had been running it alongside their own work. It conducted its first examinations in 2018 and now runs most of India's national entrance tests — JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET at both levels, UGC-NET, CMAT and others — as computer-based tests at centres across the country. It sets no admission policy of its own: it conducts the examination and reports the scores, and the institutions and councils that asked for it decide what those scores mean.

Examinations NTA conducts

  • AIAPGET

All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test

AIAPGET is the single entrance examination for postgraduate study in the traditional systems of medicine practised in India — Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy — covering MD, MS and postgraduate diploma courses at recognised colleges. The National Testing Agency conducts it on behalf of the Ministry of Ayush. Candidates come to it holding a BAMS, BUMS, BSMS or BHMS degree, and are expected to have finished the internship that follows one.

  • CMAT

    Common Management Admission Test

CMAT is a national entrance examination for admission to management programmes — MBA and PGDM — at institutions approved by the All India Council for Technical Education. AICTE conducted it until 2019, when it passed to the National Testing Agency. It is a computer-based test of quantitative technique, logical reasoning, language comprehension, general awareness and entrepreneurship, and participating institutes decide for themselves what weight to give the score alongside the rest of an application.

  • CSIR-UGC NET

    Joint CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test

The Joint CSIR-UGC NET determines eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship and for Assistant Professor appointments in the science subjects. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the University Grants Commission.

  • CUET PG

    Common University Entrance Test (Postgraduate)

CUET PG is the common entrance test for admission to postgraduate programmes at central, state, private and deemed universities that have adopted it. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency as a computer-based test, and for a participating department it replaces the entrance examination that department used to set for itself — a candidate sits one test and applies to several universities on the strength of it, rather than travelling to each in turn.

  • CUET UG

    Common University Entrance Test (Undergraduate)

CUET UG is the common entrance test for admission to undergraduate programmes at central universities and other participating institutions. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency and replaces separate university-level entrance examinations for the institutions that use it.

  • ICAR AIEEA

ICAR All India Entrance Examination for Admission

The ICAR entrance examinations govern admission to agricultural university programmes and to research fellowships, conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

  • JEE Main

    Joint Entrance Examination (Main)

JEE Main is the national entrance examination for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions, and is the qualifying route to JEE Advanced for the IITs. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency in two sessions each year.

  • NCHM JEE

    NCHMCT Joint Entrance Examination

NCHM JEE is the entrance examination for the B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, a three-year degree taught at the Institutes of Hotel Management spread across India and at affiliated private institutes. The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology sets the programme; the National Testing Agency conducts the examination on its behalf. It is the standard route into hotel management study in India for candidates leaving school.

  • NEET UG

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)

NEET UG is the single national entrance examination for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, AYUSH and allied courses in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency, and a qualifying score is required for admission to MBBS and BDS programmes at recognised institutions.

  • NITTT

National Initiative for Technical Teachers Training

NITTT is not an entrance examination. It is the assessment attached to the National Initiative for Technical Teachers Training, which newly recruited teachers at AICTE-approved technical institutions work through as part of their induction. The training runs across a series of modules on teaching and assessment, and a teacher clears each one by examination. The National Testing Agency conducts those in remote proctored mode, so a candidate sits them from their own institution rather than travelling to a centre.

  • NTET

National Teachers Eligibility Test for AYUSH

NTET establishes whether someone is eligible to be appointed as a teacher in a college of Indian systems of medicine or homoeopathy — Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy. It exists because the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine and the National Commission for Homoeopathy require a common standard for teaching posts rather than leaving each college to judge for itself; the National Testing Agency conducts it on their behalf. It qualifies a candidate for appointment; it does not appoint them.

  • UGC-NET

University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test

UGC-NET determines eligibility for Assistant Professor appointments and for the Junior Research Fellowship in Indian universities and colleges. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of the University Grants Commission.
