Institute of Banking Personnel Selection

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection runs the common recruitment process that most public-sector banks in India use to hire Probationary Officers, Clerks and Specialist Officers, rather than each bank testing candidates on its own. It traces back to 1975, when the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association set up Personnel Selection Services to design a common testing process for banks newly nationalised six years earlier; it was registered as an independent society in 1984 and took its current name then. It began the Common Written Examination in 2011, and a candidate who clears it is not hired by IBPS itself — it ranks candidates and the participating banks do the hiring.

Examinations IBPS conducts

  • IBPS Clerk

    Common Recruitment Process for Clerks

IBPS Clerk recruits Clerks — the entry-level officer-track post below Probationary Officer — to the public-sector banks that participate in the common recruitment process. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts a Preliminary examination followed by a Main examination; unlike IBPS PO, there is no interview stage.

  • IBPS PO

Common Recruitment Process for Probationary Officers

IBPS PO recruits Probationary Officers to the public-sector banks that participate in the common recruitment process. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts it in three stages: a Preliminary examination, a Main examination, and an interview conducted by the participating banks. A candidate who clears all three is allotted to a bank and begins as a Probationary Officer.

  • IBPS RRB

Common Recruitment Process for Regional Rural Banks

IBPS RRB recruits Office Assistants and Officers in Scale I, II and III to India's Regional Rural Banks, run as a separate process from the IBPS examinations for public-sector banks because RRBs recruit against their own vacancies and, for some posts, give weight to a candidate's knowledge of the local language. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts a Preliminary examination (waived for Scale II and III officers in some cycles), a Main examination, and an interview for officer posts.

  • IBPS SO

Common Recruitment Process for Specialist Officers

IBPS SO recruits Specialist Officers — IT, agriculture, law, HR, marketing and other professional streams distinct from the general banking cadre — to the public-sector banks that participate in the common recruitment process. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts a Preliminary examination, a Main examination specific to the chosen stream, and an interview conducted by the participating banks.
