Question 37

For the given circuit (shown in part (A)) the time dependent input voltage vᵢₙ(t) and corresponding output vₒ(t) are shown in part (B) and part (C), respectively. Part (A) shows a source vᵢₙ feeding a branch between points X and Y containing an ideal diode in series with a Zener diode (Vz = 5V), with vₒ(t) measured across this X-Y branch. Part (B): vᵢₙ(t) is a cosine wave of amplitude 20V over 0-2 min. Part (C): vₒ(t) is clipped to a flat-topped wave between +5V and −5V. Identify the components used in the circuit between points X and Y.

  • A. a resistor, then an ideal diode (conducting from Y to X)
  • B. an ideal diode (conducting from Y to X), then a Zener diode (conducting from X to Y)Correct answer
  • C. a resistor, then a Zener diode (conducting from X to Y)
  • D. an ideal diode (conducting from Y to X), then a Zener diode reversed (conducting from Y to X)
